Since becoming a consultant, I have met more than my share of professional people who are what I call “digitally challenged.” Over the years their numbers have dwindled, but I am sometimes still surprised when I meet 40+ year-olds that seem almost proud of the fact that they’ve resisted embracing technology in their lives. This always raises a flag for me because I truly believe that being digitally literate is a lot like basic literacy — without it, you will fall behind.

Today, the importance of being digitally literate goes beyond today’s corporate environments (where it’s practically mandatory) and is a skill set required in almost all parts of life or occupations. Can you imagine a car mechanic working on a 2013 car with an electronic dashboard that can’t use a smart phone?

Whether it’s for banking, communicating or locating a store on an interactive map in a mall, digital literacy has become a prerequisite for successfully managing most of today’s world.

Learn more about Common Craft videos today! The good news is, if you or someone you know is still somewhat of a Luddite, there is a video you can watch that just might motivate you to look at your lack of digital skills a little differently. The brilliant communicators at Common Craft have been breaking down and explaining all types of things in short explanatory videos (now solely for teachers and trainers) for quite a while now and I was thrilled to find that they recently took on the subject of digital literacy.

Check out this brilliant video from them and learn why becoming digitally literate is as important today as it was to read and write way back when.
